Anchors Aweigh – The phrase “anchors aweigh” is a report that the anchors are clear of the sea bottom and, therefore, the ship is officially under way.1

If you can’t tie knots, tie lots – said to newbie sailors when they botch a knot tying job.2

Knots & Nautical Miles – A nautical mile measures distance and a knot measures speed.3

  • It is slightly more than a statute (land measured) mile (1 nautical mile = 1.1508 statute miles ).
  • A knot is one nautical mile per hour (1 knot = 1.15 miles per hour ).
