How to UNLINK a Twitter and Facebook Account

May 31, 2011 | Written by Amber Sawaya

We received a call for help the other day to help get a Twitter and Facebook account unlinked.

It took us 20 minutes to figure it out (made all the more infuriating because you KNOW it should be easy). If you found this article via search I bet you can relate.

What created this unholy alliance?

You probably did something like this to link the two accounts: Add Twitter to Facebook

Remove Twitter from Facebook

  1. On the top navigation bar go to Account > Privacy Settings

  2. Go to Apps & Websites in the bottom left and click Edit your settings

  3. You should see the offending app in the list – click Edit Settings

  4. Choose Remove App

  5. Confirm

Thanks! Quick and easy. I didn’t want to bother clinking on links so I figured I would just look for a quick walkthrough on how to unlink Facbook and Twitter.

I am confused. Many years ago I created a facebook and a twitter and linked them 2 together. Last year I deleted the facebook account (deleted not deactivated – i cant even get onto the facebook account as it doesnt exsit yet you can still look on the account – very annoying) Well I got a new FB account and linked it to my twitter so when I update my new fb it updates on twitter, the problem is when I tweet it updates my old fb account which was deleted!!!!!!! I am currently very annoyed with myself for not knowing how or why this has happened or how to correct it. I have tried to delete the link from the old twitter and even put my new fb onto the twitter account but it still updates the old FB arghhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP before I go uber insane!!!!!!!!!

Have you tried going into Twitter and revoking access? I think yours might be a special case where the fix I posted won’t help. Maybe try contacting Twitter or Facebook and see if you can get some help that way.

My issue is complicated, very complicated…

I once had a twitter account registered to an old outdated email I can no longer access. This account is linked to my Facebook. I recently made a new Twitter for my ministry and cannot link to my Facebook because the old account is still linked to it. I cannot delete the old Twitter because I cannot access the email, and the old phone number has long since changed. I removed it on the Facebook side but it is still linked on the Twitter side. @Support on Twitter seems useless. Any ideas? Anyone?

Hm, I’m not entirely sure. Have you tried contacting Twitter or Facebook and see if they can help you? The other thing you could try is to search your email archive and see if you can find any information about the old account that would help you access it.

Thank you! It looks a little different than when you first posted, but it’s still in the same hard to intuitively find place.

Not sure but I keep being told that there is an Apps and Websites option but I don’t have this at all so I get stopped in my tracks at this step. Is there something I’m missing or another way to find this slippery little sucker so I can STOP it. Erg, very frustrating indeed.

I found this way is easier:

Make sure you’re logged into Facebook
Use the link. (you can just type that link in the url while logged in)
Find the page you’d like to unlink, and click “Unlink from Twitter”. (found in small print at the bottom)
